...The Manga page has a new review!! Midori has been really busy, but she made sure she got on the review right away! The review is on one of The Otaku Momentum's admitted favorites, Great Teacher Onizuka.

If you haven't read it or seen the anime, it's a really funny story about a 19 year old ex-biker gang member Onizuka who happens to be a virgin and is trying to find himself a girlfriend. Japanese Summer Festivals: American Style

Know that the con season is underway, it got me thinking, what about Japanese festivals in the US. I wanted to explore the idea of Japanese festivals for those who can't afford that trip to Japan.

In St. Louis, Missouri you can find the US's longest running Japanese festival. Since 1977, the Missouri Botanical Garden has hosted a Japanese culture festival. Not only is it the oldest Japanese festival, but it is also the nations oldest botanical garden. Founded in 1859, it's not only beautiful, it's a living piece of history. The festival takes place Labor Day weekend which for many people is very convenient. September 4-6 for only $15 go and enjoy many of the great things the Japanese culture has to offer.

  • For those of you in Connecticut, there is a one day festival in Westport on July 10th from 2:00pm-4:30pm. In Jesup Park the Fairfield County Japanese Society celebrates Bon Odori. They celebrate with folk dancing, O-Tatsu Taiko drummers. This event is free, but you need to bring your own chairs and refreshments. Great for the thrifty vacationer. Bon Odori has been enjoyed in Japan since 657 and has been brought to Connecticut since 1993.

Santa Cruz, California is celebrating this week with the Santa Cruz Japanese Culture Festival. On June 19th, enjoy food, arts and crafts and Japanese culture both traditional and modern. The Japanese community of Santa Cruz uses this festival as a way for Japanese Americans to meet up and to raise awareness about the culture.

  • Santa Cruz Japanese Culture Fest

  • Not quite a festival, in Cincinnati, Ohio they are in the 15th year of a butterfly show. This years Butterflies of Japan will introduce crickets of all sorts of sizes. This event runs from April 17-June 20th and only cost $6.00 so hurry to the Krohn Conservatory to see this truly breath taking event.

  • Summer Season Begins!

In the true tradition of summers, the anime this summer is a bit lacking. Lacking in the sense of how much is coming out. There are a few shows that look worth taking a look at. You be the judge though...check out the link for Chart Fag in our links to the right to see what's coming out.

    Otaku For the Win

Whether you agree or not, the "Non-Existent Youth" Bill has been shot down by the entire Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly. So if you like loli nipples, read on...for now anyway. This bill would have put a stop on "youth" in suggestive situations not only in manga, but also anime, games and memorabilia.

    Midori's Trip to Texas

Midori went to Texas recently and wanted to bring back some fun stuff to share with everyone. She really didn't get to go to everything she wanted too, but she took plenty of pictures so everyone could enjoy the view.

Though she didn't get to go to as many "otaku" related things, gardenshe did get to go to a Japanese garden.

The garden was located right where you wouldn't expect something so beautiful, right smack in the middle of Fort Worth, Texas.

Midori has some pictures on facebook if you feel like checking those out.

  • Midori's Facebook Page

  • gardenShe did manage to get some sushi in while down there and she said, "..OMG it was amazing!" The one real big bummer was that Midori was unable to go to this free Japanese/Chinese art and culture exhibit called The Crow Collection. If you go to the website, you can see why exactly she was at least a little bummed.

  • The Crow Collection in Dallas, Texas

  • Some other things to keep in mind if you ever travel to this area...there are at least 3 anime conventions just in the Fort Worth area alone. If you aren't into the crowds, every Second Tuesday there is a theater in Fort Worth that shows anime on the big screen and there are several anime clubs that are open to the public.

Sojiro's Talent Was Hard To Ignore...

When we started the Moe Contest, we were looking for something fun to use on the T.O.M. Contest Page and hoped people would get really into it, but she sent such a great submission that it was no contest.

Once again she blew us away not only by the effort she poured into the project, but the shear talent in the art work she presented. Heck, people were even fighting on the forum to have themselves added to the mix!! We just want to thank her again a million times over for such a wonderful job. Here is a look at her character layouts....

..if you want to read her story, go to our forums under the Contest board..if you aren't signed up...by all means..do so!
